Acid Reflux Foods to Avoid

Suffering from acid reflux is more painful than many people believe so that when they do have a bout of what was formerly called ‘acid indigestion,’ they suddenly know how serious this can be. Whether you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or other conditions such as Ellison-Zollinger syndrome, it is imperative to understand that diet and lifestyle can go a long way in treating acid reflux and that there are certain acid reflux foods to avoid.

Acid Reflux Foods to Avoid List

Although there are certainly specific foods to avoid, it is more important to understand food groups that can trigger acid reflux. For example, chocolate is a known culprit. So when you are compiling an acid reflux foods to avoid list you may want to list chocolate for sure, but then you would need to have sub categories such as brownies, chocolate cake, chocolate cookies and things of that nature. Among the items on your acid reflux foods to avoid list would be:

  • Alcohol (a beverage, yes – but a key trigger for acid reflux)
  • Fats of any kind – including fried foods and even fats normally considered healthy
  • Sweets – candies, sugary drinks, cakes, donuts, etc.
  • Caffeine in any form – beverage, supplements, coffee, tea
  • Mints – predominantly peppermint
  • Citric acid – fruits, juices and a big culprit is tomatoes!

Of all the items on the acid reflux foods to avoid diet, chocolate is the hardest one for people to go without. Do you know just how many chocoholics there are in this world?

Lifestyle Changes Are Also Important

One of the items you will often find on an ‘acid reflux foods to avoid list’ is not a food at all. It is common to find tobacco listed on foods to avoid, but this is technically a ‘drug’ unless, of course, they are referring to someone who chews tobacco! However, on a serious note, tobacco does have serious repercussions besides the typical carcinogenic concerns and that is that tobacco has the unfortunate side effect of relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter which then allows stomach acid to push back up (reflux) into the esophagus where it doesn’t belong. The first item, therefore, on lifestyle changes is to quit smoking. This is easier said than done, but it is a necessary treatment for acid reflux as well as in terms of your overall health.

Dietary Habits, Obesity and Exercise

Dietary habits also need to be reassessed. How and when you eat is just as important as what you eat. It does absolutely no good to avoid certain foods if you are going to eat enormous meals that stretch your stomach and thus prompting acid reflux. It is recommended that those who have ongoing problems with acid reflux eat much smaller meals more frequently. Also, in conjunction with changes in eating habits, it is important to recognize that obesity and acid reflux do tend to go hand and hand. As you learn to control what you eat and how much you eat, the severity of acid reflux should subside to some extent.

It is suggested that light exercise may also be of some help even though data in this regard is inconclusive. What we do know is that extreme exercise can exacerbate acid reflux so be aware of this if you plan on adding exercise to your regimen to reduce weight as a remedy for acid reflux. Nonetheless, it is of prime importance to consult with a medical professional prior to treating what you feel is acid reflux because it may be some underlying condition which is even more serious. It is good to know which acid reflux foods to avoid, but it is better to know what is causing the symptoms in the first place.

Acid Reflux Diet Tips

Acid reflux disease is a major problem for many people. The symptoms can be almost debilitating if not treated. A good number of people who have this disorder do not even know the name of what they have. They simply think they are sufferers of chronic heartburn. The problem with acid reflux is that it does not go away with time, does not heal itself and will only continue to become worse if nothing is done to treat it. There are many medical treatments for the common symptoms of acid reflux but more and more it is coming to light that the key to treating acid reflux is watching what you eat. For this reason following a strict acid reflux diet is a very good suggestion.

Leaner Cuts of Meat

A common question among people who are striving to come up with a good acid reflux diet menu is, “Will I have to give up meats?” The answer is no. A person who suffers from acid reflux can eat meats; however, leaner cuts are more favorable. This being said, it is easy to come up with acid reflux diet recipes that include meat. The thing to remember is the fat content. Fatty foods tend to cause heartburn so if you eat lean cuts of meat and make sure to drain any excess fat then it is possible to eat almost any type of meat. It would not be a good idea to eat it every day but once or twice a week is fine.

Yogurt as Part of an Acid Reflux Diet Menu Plan

Yogurt is a wonderful food for the entire digestive system. However, many people are unaware that only very specific types of yogurt will work for acid reflux. First of all, many of the yogurts that are bought in the grocery store are so full of artificial flavours, colors and sugars that they may even do more harm than good. It is vital when choosing yogurt that you pick a brand that is all natural and organic when possible. There are a variety of yogurts that are actually made from goat or sheep’s milk and these are even better as they contain properties that are closet to human breast milk. It is also important that the yogurt you choose has active enzymes as this is what is going to help treat your acid reflux. Make sure that you look for “live cultures” on the label.

Aloe Vera Juice as Part of an Acid Reflux Diet

Aloe Vera juice is becoming more and more popular as a healing food for digestive issues. For years holistic doctors have known the value of aloe but it hasn’t been until recently that this plant has been put in the spotlight as a wonder food for acid reflux. If the taste of the juice is not desired then Aloe Vera capsules can be purchased at most health food stores. The plant works my helping to soothe and heal erosions in the digestive tract. Even people who no longer have symptoms of acid reflux should continue to incorporate Aloe into their diet regimen.

There are quite a few things that people suffering from acid reflux should avoid. You should create a list of acid reflux diet restrictions and stick to it. Coffee and nicotine are at the top of the list of foods or substances to avoid. Foods that are spicy and have high fat contents should also be avoided at all costs. In addition, nuts can aggravate acid reflux and lead to bouts of heartburn. Sugary snacks such as cakes and candies can also cause heartburn. Besides changing your diet there are several other things you should do when trying to avoid acid reflux symptoms. For one thing, eating just before lying down to go to bed is a very bad idea. You should eat two to three hours before retiring to your bed. Small and more frequent meals are also suggested as overeating can definitely lead to undesirable consequences where acid reflux is concerned.

Onion, Garlic and heartburn

After series of experiments I discovered that fresh onion and garlic are guaranteed heartburn/stomach pain triggers for me. Even though both of them are not acidic in nature they contain very bitter substances which irritate my stomach and cause hell lot of pain. This pain is different from the usual heartburn caused by acid but it hurts as bad.

The only form of onion and garlic I can consume without any irritation is well cooked: fried or steamed. It is good that I can consume at least cooked onions since they add flavor to the food but cooking destroys many vitamins in onion thus making it less nutritious. But I haven’t discovered any way to make raw onions or garlic harmless for my stomach.

PS: Don’t believe to anyone who tells you that garlic or onion could help you against stomach diseases. They’re completely wrong.

Correction: actually it looks like onions don’t loose many vitamins and minerals during cooking. Please see tables below.

Sabrosa salsa is easy on heartburn

Sabrosa means tasty in spanish and it would be especially tasty for heartburn sufferers since it is produced in a way to be easy on heartburn.

So how Duane Thompson, the inventor of this product, did it? Even though his salsa contains some tomatoes they are thoroughly cooked and pureed to keep acidity low. Another ingredient which is great for taste and good for you stomach is roasted green and red peppers.

So if you’re keen to try some salsa and keep your stomach safe – try some of Sabrosa salsa. You can find it in selected Sam’s warehouse locations or directly in Sabrosa foods online store.

Milk is not a remedy for nighttime heartburn!

Milk is a very popular home remedy for heartburn. Well it may work fine during the day to soothe the stomach after heavy meal. But don’t use it before sleep to prevent nighttime heartburn. The problem is that milk is only effective for 30 or 40 minutes. Since it is a high calorie food which requires quite some energy to be digested your stomach will produce even more acid than milk originally neutralized. That is why if you had some milk before going to sleep to treat your heartburn you can expect a sleepless night.

I strongly recommend to replace it with water since it will dilute the acid and get it out of stomach faster.

Don’t try to get rid of heartburn by eating something (there are lots of beliefs that eating something will help heartburn). If it is something high calorie it will produce even more acid.

Best recommendation is to stay awake for 2-3 hours after your last meal. This will guarantee that you will go to sleep with an empty stomach and zero nighttime heartburn.

If you cannot stay awake for that long I strongly recommend getting wedge pillow. It will elevate your body in a way preventing acid from getting to your esophagus. Wedge pillow could be uncomfortable for some people but you don’t need to sleep on it entire night (except a case when you have a severe chronic heartburn which needs to be treated for several months). Usually you will need it only for first 2-3 hours of sleep.

Heartburn and some fruits acidity

I was playing with different smoothies recently to figure out what works and what doesn’t work for me. So here is my list:

Milk, banana, protein – no heartburn but taste is so-so…

Milk, banana – no heartburn – but it is just a banana… Boring!

Milk, banana, strawberry – no heartburn and tastes very nice

Milk, banana, strawberry, peach – don’t overdo with peach, it can add nice taste pattern but also can cause minor heartburn. So experiment here.

Milk, peach, strawberry – risky one. But still worth a try if you don’t like banana. Try to start small on peach since it is quite acid.

I want to try to add some kiwi to my smoothies since they taste delicious. But they are the most acidic (not counting lemon probably)…

If you see any of the smoothies causing you constant heartburn stop it and try a trusted “no heartburn” one. Then slowly add very tiny pieces of fruit you like and see what happens.

Experiment and you’ll find it!

Here are some other methods on how to cure heartburn.

What to do if fruits are causing heartburn?

This is a usual problem for all heartburn sufferers. No acid, no acid, no acid… But what if I want that strawberry, raspberry or orange in my diet?!?!

And how can you imagine living the rest of your life without eating fruits? Well there is a trick which can help you to get your vitamins without pills.

Take a couple glasses of milk put them to the blender, add banana or two add fruits or berries you want, blend them together and your heavenly smoothie is ready.

It is definitely not exactly the same as eating whole fruit but as close as it possible. Banana and milk in your smoothie will compensate for an acid in acidic fruit and entire drink will be neutral.

You probably will have to experiment before you’ll get an ideal combination.

Enjoy!

Non acidic alcohol drinks – wine story

Having heartburn sucks, but what sucks even more is not being able to relax with friends having a pint of beer or shot of vodka.

All web sites recommend completely avoiding alcohol when having heartburn. But at the same time they claim that heartburn is a life long condition. Well does it mean you will have to avoid alcohol for the rest of your life? No way!!!

We already know that wine in moderation is good for your health. But wine is the most acidic liquid you probably can find around except vinegar. And it will definitely cause heartburn in 3-5 minutes after consuming.

Many wine lovers with heartburn just try to stand the pain and take tiny pieces of pleasure before heartburn starts. But I doubt that it is really fun experience. So if you love wines you can try following.

For one month switch from usual red wines to sweet wines. Right, you probably never heard what the heck is that. No – it is not only ports (even though ports are nice ;) ). There are lots of sweet and semi-sweet wines which are very very popular in certain parts of Europe. And yes, it is not that hard to find them in US.

If you think that these wines taste like grape donut – you’re wrong! I personally respect such wines much much more than any sour ones. Good sweet wines taste better than lots of dry wines.

So if you want to get full list of such wines please go to “wine list page” where I have a list of wines which are very tasty and won’t hurt your stomach.

Please note that an alcohol is still an alcohol – so drink it in moderation. Even too much of sweet or semi-sweet wine could put your stomach on fire.

But just imagine – drinking glass of wine and not having heartburn. And if you won’t have it for a month – there is a very good chance you can start drinking dry wines in moderation too. Just don’t drink too much.

Chocolate, heartburn and your esophagus

I recently found quite an interesting paper on chocolate and esophagus. It looks like chocolate does decrease LES (lower esophagus sphincter) pressure :( … The way they propose to deal with it is to either take some antacids together with chocolate or bethanechol

I don’t like this solution. I just want to eat chocolate, just a chocolate alone!

Here is an abstract for your reference:

The adverse effect of chocolate on lower esophageal sphincter pressure

Lewis E. Wright and Donald O. Castell

Abstract: Decreased lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure after ingestion of chocolate has been previously noted. We have further evaluated the effect of chocolate on the known ability of gastric alkalinization or bethanechol to increase LES tone. 9 normal subjects were studied using an infused open-tip recording system. Pressure was monitored for a 15-min basal period, and for 60 min after ingestion of 120 ml of chocolate syrup either alone or with the concurrent administration of commercial antacid, oral bethanechol, or subcutaneous bethanechol. After chocolate ingestion, mean basal LES pressure of 14.6±1.1 (±SEM) mm Hg decreased significantly (P<0.01) to 7.9±1.3 mm Hg. An identical LES response occurred when antacid was given with the chocolate dose. Oral bethanechol (25 mg) and chocolate together resulted in lesser decreases in LES pressure. Subcutaneous bethanechol (5 mg) and chocolate produced significant increases (P<0.05) in sphincter pressure, although of lesser magnitude than reported with bethanechol alone. These results indicate that the adverse effect of chocolate on the LES is not reversed by gastric alkalinization and suggest that bethanechol in sufficient dose may overcome chocolate-induced decreases in LES pressure.
