If I make my own with Quaker Oats Old fashion oatmeal, Splenda brown sugar, and Raisins then no heartburn. |
| no | So I've been suffering with acid reflex disease for several years now. I nearly always wake-up several times in the middle of the night with heart burn, unless I've been taking Prilosec. However, the other day I made some Oatmeal cookies, and ate a couple of them before bed -no heartburn. I repeated the experiment last night -no heartburn. WOW! I used the standard recipe off of the Quaker box, except that I made my own brown sugar using Molasses. |
| no | This is one of the only breakfast foods I can eat that does not cause heartburn in the least bit. |
| no | Real Old fashion oatmeal, (not quaker oat) will solve your trouble.. Eat them cold never cooked.. Just let them get soggy before you eat them. People should look at the water or milk for their trouble first. The water is not distilled or the milk is pasteurized. Again see notes on Kefir |
| yes | I have acid reflux. I get heartburn evertime I eat Oatmeal, greasy foods, or spicy foods. |
| yes | I love oatmeal but am coming to the conclusion that it is the cause of my heartburn. Is there something short of meds to keep this from happening? |
| yes | Oatmeal is good for us but I thought it was NOT supposed to cause heartburn. I eat a lot of spicy foods without problem, but when I eat oatmeal it ruins my day with heartburn, I don't get it. |
| yes | Plain old-fashioned (not instant) oatmeal, with nothining on it, give me heartburn every time. Nothing else does. I have heard that oatmeal is a good way to treat heartburn. Obviously that isn't the case for everyone. What is causing this reaction? |
| yes | i like to eat instant quaker oats hot cereal for breakfast, but i get heartburn every time. the reason i've stuck to it is because it keeps things regular, as in prevents constipation. the heartburn is not very severe, and only lasts about 20-30 mins. its a small price to pay (perhaps) for all the benefit of oatmeal cereal. however, if a eat a traditional breakfast (eggs, buttered toast, cheese, bacon etc) in any combination, absolutely no heartburn. and no heartburn after salads, cold cereal, meats, vegetables, fruits - i'm good with everything but oatmeal... how come? |
| yes | I thought I was the only one! Every time I eat oatmeal (plain) I get a sour taste in my mouth and mild to moderate heartburn. What the heck is that all about? |
| yes | I used to eat oats everyday with milk, now that I don't add milk any more I have started to get heartburn every day. |
| yes | All the same here. GERD and oatmeal, although I love it, creates havoc for me. I always thought that was weird since the foods you would think we be more of a problem (i.e. spicy) don't give me much trouble. What gives? |
| yes | Everytime, it doesn't matter what i do or do not add to it. Within the hour it causes heartburn that lasts (it seems) forever. |
| yes | Same problem here, it's so quick and filling and handy at work I would eat it out of my mug in the mornings, but it gives me the absolute worst heartburn every single time, so I had to quit. Is this maybe caused by a gluten allergy or something?? |
| yes | I looooooove oatmeal and it is one of the best things one can do for themselves at the start of their day... or so I thought until I started getting day-long heartburn from it! Do you know how hard it is to do Yoga with such a burn?
My co-worker says he knows oatmeal can do this to you and he recommended a Rolex.. another advised to trink a glass of milk after eating it.. I guess there's nothing else to do than try it out and give a report about it later?... I've never had a problem with it before until just recently and I'm pretty sure I've pin pointed the problem to be the oatmeal. yup. |
| yes | |
| yes | I know someone who's also been getting extreme heartburn from oatmeal and only oatmeal. From everything I've read on the matter, oatmeal should NOT cause this. So, I'm wondering, in how many of these cases is organic oatmeal causing it? Because if it's not, than we could possibly conclude that it's not the oatmeal itself. I'll have my friend try it and see... |
| yes | I find it amusing that I hear that oatmeal is not supposed to cause heartburn, yet there are so many "yes" comments here. For me, it is torture. I absolutely love oatmeal, and even as a little kid it would make me miserable at school, with not just heartburn, but a constant burning in my lower stomach, as well. I just can't eat it anymore! |

| yes | yes - every single time i have oatmeal i get bad heartburn that last all day. i have tried every possible way of preparing it and it will give me heartburn every time. organic, rolled, quick, fine powdered, oat bran - no matter what form its in, it will give me heart burn. i have found that adding cinnamon will lessen the amount of time and severity of my heartburn after eating it - but i rather just stay clear of it. |
| yes | I eat organic instant oatmeal with a Tsp of raw suger and it has caused heartburn the past 2 days. |
| yes | If I eat oatmeal in the morning for breakfast, it gives me acid reflux. However, if I eat oatmeal at night, it does not give me acid reflux. This is interesting. Does anyone know why this might happen? |
| yes | In the morning vs. at night. I suffered from acid reflux for a looong time, back before it was a common diagnosis. I could not figure it out, thought it was tomatos, thought it was onions, peppers, gatorade, etc, etc.... Turns out, those foods were only working in combo with something else.....what?? Coffee! Yep, was the last think I considered cause I didnt wanna give up my joe. But went to green tea and overnight, BAM! no more heartburn!! That was many years ago, and subsequently I have stopped alchohol and cigarettes. Now, I can have coffee again, as much as I want, but I am not near as addicted to it as I once was. The root, for me, as near as I can tell....alcohol and tobacco! All other problems wtih food/drink stemmed from those. If you use alcohol/tobacco and you have health issues, STOP. |
| yes | I googled oatmeal and heartburn because I get it so bad! I love it too but the heartburn kills me! What the heck is in it that does that??? |
| yes | Wow, who would have thought that my favorite breakfast would give me heartburn. Its the kind of heartburn where my vision goes blurry and I cannot walk. Oatmeal?!?!? |
| yes | Diagnosed with GERD recently. Yesterday I was craving a bowl of homemade oatmeal (have not had it in YEARS). So I ate it and was fine until bed. I woke up every hour last night with heartburn so bad I thought I might vomit. I took pepto on top of my prilosec and slept in a chair for about and hour and now I feel fine. I thought oatmeal was good food until I found all of your comments! |

I recently started to eat old fashioned oatmeal for breakfast, with just water, apples and cinnamon and noticed I was getting heartburn, but did not contribute it to oatmeal. | no | I get heartburn all the time and take bicarbonate of soda to ease the discomfort. Recently I discovered that eating spinach (cooked in a little olive oil with chopped garlic)prevents the onset of heartburn. It's like magic. I've been experimenting with this for several months and the results have been amazing. I takes five minutes to prepare: Just pour a couple of tablespoons of olive oil into a large pan. Let it get fairly hot before adding a teaspoon of chopped garlic. Let garlic heat to a nutty smell (but not browned). Then add a bag of fresh, pre-washed spinach. Use tongs to keep it moving in the pan until it has cooked all the way down. Put it onto a plate and grate fresh parmesan cheese over it. |
| no | I have a LOT of problems with heartburn, even water seems to set it off. Spinach, on the other hand, seems to help a ton. If I eat some spinach (fresh or canned) every few days, I am completely heartburn free. As soon as I stop, the heartburn comes back. Spinach seems to be my secret weapon. |
